Typical methods for PMI include\u00a0X-ray fluorescence\u00a0(XRF) and\u00a0optical emission spectrometry\u00a0(OES).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gli spettrometri portatili\u00a0 sfruttano il principio dell&#8217;energia dispersiva da fluorescenza di raggi X, comunemente chiamata tecnologia XRF. L&#8217;effetto di fluorescenza avviene quando i raggi X colpiscono un elettrone orbitante attorno all&#8217;atomo di un elemento, l&#8217;elettrone colpito viene allontanato dalla sua orbita e il posto lasciato vuoto viene occupato dall&#8217;elettrone dell&#8217;orbita superiore. Quest&#8217;ultimo nell&#8217;effettuare il salto di orbitale libera l&#8217;energia in eccesso che viene misurata dall&#8217;analizzatore. Durante l&#8217;analisi questo avviene per ogni atomo di ogni elemento presente nel campione e la velocit\u00e0 di calcolo dell&#8217;analizzatore riesce in pochi secondi a determinare quantit\u00e0 e qualit\u00e0 di tutti gli elementi presenti nel campione in analisi.
